It's 4:38 am, I haven't been up all night working on a paper in a long time, and I've still got a long way to go before the 9:30 deadline, but whew. Sigh of relief. I have found it-- a Clever Title.

Okay, are you ready for this? Hang on...

"Adjectives in Hausa: Is 'That' All There Is?"

I see it! The beginning of a smile on your face, oh. Wait. Are you confused? Isn't it self-explanatory? Well, see, I'm writing this paper about how Hausa doesn't have very many adjectives but this one dude thought that their word for 'that' was the only true adjective....

It wasn't really true. Plenty of em, they just don't look like pure adjectives (like Jews and Gentiles and children of God maybe?). Besides, wouldn't you be lonely if you were the only adjective in your language. Talk about being isolated, get a load of Happy over there. Or Blue. Or Exhausted.

Well, hours to go before I sleep. Happy birthday to Paul!

  • I think my toenail is going to leave me. I don't understand. I thought we had this great relationship... I mean, we've been through so much together. It's always been there for me, protecting my big toe, hanging out in my sandals. We pretty much do everything together. It's not that I'm ashamed of it, either-- I paint it in the summer and everyone can see that we're an item.

But today I went to trim it, and I could just tell that something wasn't right. We haven't talked about it or anything, but I won't be surprised if it's gone soon. Amazing how something so little works its way into your heart.

And Derek Webb's playing in Muncie tomorrow night...

  • In the autumn when the trees catch cold
They run a fever of red and gold
And as I lie beneath the eaves
I hear them sneezing off their leaves.

    --Julia

I don't know her last name. Second grader from chuch in Hammond, won a state poetry contest with this. My other favorite contemporary child poet, Joe Bartkovich:

So deadly is the dragon living among us.
It grown inside its cave, black and mean.
With time it burns the heart of friends,
So deadly is the dragon called hate.

He just turned 7. It's a little submerged here, but he has a great sense of humor. Speaking of which, did you hear about the new restaurant on the moon? Yeah, they have great food, but no atmosphere.
